My New Dedication to Powerseller Princess

My New Dedication to Powerseller Princess

Hey All!

So its a new year and I’ve been slacking. Lately I have been putting all of my effort into my other blog Escaping the 9 to 5 and neglecting good old Powerseller Princess, which is just wrong. So I decided that for every post I do on my other blog I will be doing a post on this website, no matter how short, it will be informational and most of all helpful to anyone trying to make more money on eBay by powerselling.

For a minute I was thinking of turning Powerseller Princess over to another eBay seller who has reached a certain level of success and letting a new person really push this site to the next level, but for now I’ll keep doing it myself. One convinced me was checking my Alexa ratings, something you can do here. It said my page rank wasn’t great but amazingly my inbound links from other sites were at 49, which is great for a blog that posts haphazardly like I do. What it showed me was that lots of people are looking for advice on hot selling items on ebay, how to sell on ebay and powerseller tips.

What I want from  you now is this, tell me what you want to read about, anything that has even remotely to do with eBay and making money selling online and I’ll write on it! Also I am rededicating myself to comment more often and really get involved in building a community around PowersellerPrincess.com.

Cheers to the New Year all you powersellers!

The Future of the eBay Powerseller in 2010

The Future of the eBay Powerseller in 2010

Dear eBay Powerseller,

Hi pal, we’ve come to the end of the year for selling on eBay. How was it for you? Was it grand, were your expectations met and exceeded? If so congrats! I’m happy for you and instead of reading the rest of this article pat yourself on the back, consider yourself one of the lucky few and go eat a congratulatory donut or something.

If you are still reading you didn’t get to pat yourself on the back or eat a donut (sad face) but it doesn’t necessarily mean your a bad salesperson or your eBay biz is going down the tubes. It just means the times, they are a changing. When I started Powerseller Princess I also began a blog called Escaping the 9 to 5 where I wrote about my life as a start up entrepreneur… I blog there more than ever as my businesses (eBay and this website and my social media marketing firm) grow bigger every day.

But when I started the blog and the subsequent social media marketing business a little while back it wasn’t because business on eBay was booming. It was actually harder than ever to make big money on the giant reseller. Now as I started researching new tactics and ways to do things I documented them all on here and I found a lot of money I’d been leaving on the table. I’ve shared those secrets with you all as well as a lot of the places I find inventory for the last year. But now I have something else to add to my eBay power selling advice. I think its time for you to diversify.

Now in no way do I mean quit selling on eBay. Instead I mean its time to get with the new social attitude of the web and push your eBay auctions even harder on sites like Twitter, Facebook and Youtube. But I also mean you may want to consider selling on other platforms and begin creating other side businesses as you grow your eBay revenues. This is what I have done for the last year and its been great. I have made more money than ever and with less effort. A lot of how I did that via selling on eBay I outline in my eBook which still works like a charm for those of you who want to be true eBay power sellers and make a living online. Other ways I make money I’ve outlined in various posts on my Escaping the 9 to 5 blog.

Why do I say diversify? Because why make less when you can make more? Even if you are bringing in 5, 10 or 20 k a month selling on eBay why not double that by selling on some other platforms and using some social media style strategies in marketing.

Here are some eBay powerseller secrets to use. A great place to sell if you are into any kind of handmade, unique or vintage items is on Etsy. The fees are much lower and because its more specialized you are a bigger fish in a small pond. Another place is on Craigslist especially if you sell a lot of larger pieces that are costly to mail.

Here are some other strategies to make sure that you are still a Power seller  in 2010 and that you make more next year than you did this previous one.

  1. Get Social. I’ve said it time and again, you MUST get social to survive on eBay these days. You need to build a solid, loyal following on Twitter and you need to create a strong Facebook  presence for yourself. Linkedin and Youtube are great places to get a foot hold too. If you are interested in building a loyal Twitter following with no work except just tweeting and interacting check out my social media project here.
  2. Get Real. If you are selling on eBay you need to treat it like your REAL job. Buy business cards, get an LLC and act like a big business for goodness sake. When people ask you what you do say “I’m founder at blank, Inc” or “Sales manager at blank corp.” then if they ask what that is go into what you sell on eBay. Selling on eBay isn’t a game anymore, it isn’t easy breezy to make money there… instead you have to fight and create to carve out a profitable niche for yourself and your eBay store. So stop treating it like its a hobby and get serious about success.
  3. Get Creative. Run contests, offer sales, offer free shipping for people who follow you on Facebook or Twitter. Build an e-commerce store on a separate platform like Wordpress that runs all your eBay auctions on its front page and people that are searching for words similar to what you are selling can find you not just on eBay but on Google as well.

Have a happy New Year my dearest eBayers and I hope for the biggest sales of your life next year! If you have questions, comments or testimonials please leave them in the comment section below!

What Sells on eBay | Using the 80/20 Principle to Make More with Less

What Sells on eBay | Using the 80/20 Principle to Make More with Less

Often when people start selling on eBay they put up just whatever is laying around their house. Sometimes this can be a decent way to get to know the eBay marketplace, often I suggest reading an eBay ebook on the topic of what sells on eBay or buying from a wide range of sellers to get a feel for  power seller practices.

After a few weeks of buying products or researching what sells on eBay you’ll see that even most power sellers offer a wide array of items. You may think that this is the best way to go… but if you check their ‘completed listings’ you’ll notice most of what they sell (around 80%) either doesn’t find a buyer or sells for chump change.

So why the inflated eBay stores holding hundreds or thousands of items when the sellers bread and butter comes from a small margin? No clue. Literally, I have no idea. I don’t believe in this practice and neither should you. In fact if you are a seller that does this I challenge you to read the rest of this post about Pareto’s law and see if it doesn’t make a huge difference in your bottom line & peace of mind.

Pareto’s principle or the law of the vital few has been around for a long time… Pareto actually discovered this law when he realized that from the tomatoes he was growing in his garden only about 20% grew huge & plump and the others barely made it. So Pareto rightly concluded, why pay attention to the 80% that doesn’t produce any “fruits” for your labors & instead focus on the 20% that matter. That was when the 80/20 principle was born. Now it is used all over the world, in Fortune 500 companies & by savvy managers everywhere to cut costs & waste in favor of productiveness that results from focusing on the vital few.

Pareto’s law can be used for power selling on eBay as well. Lets take Jill as an example:

what sells on ebay??

what sells on ebay??

Jill sells widgets… thousands of them a month are in her eBay store, but when she runs the numbers she sees that mostly the high end widgets pay her bills where as the smaller widgets sell only once and a while. Even worse with the smaller widgets her profit margin is almost nothing… because after the free shipping Jill offers & the costs to list her smaller widgets she walks away with pennies on the dollar when a small widget sells. So Jill decides to implement the 80/20 principle, a concept that scares her but she knows something must be done. When Jill eradicates a whopping 80% of her inventory that the small, low profit widgets took she is amazed… not only does nothing bad happen, but her new razor like focus on the 20% of big widgets really pays off! She now has extra time to respond to customer emails on the profitable widgets & is freeing herself up from running small meaningless widgets to the post office.

Jill now starts a blog about the widgets she has maintained selling, this blog is specifically for the 20% widget aficionados and ranks well on Google because of its very small niche focus. Now the readers of her blog see Jill as a specialized widget expert & go to her for all their specialized widget needs… Jill’s profit soar for the 20% of widgets she still sells on eBay.

Hopefully this story makes sense & whether you’ve been selling on eBay for years or just got started you can use it practically to help cut some of the 80% of useless items from your eBay roster & start focusing on profiting more from the small group of winners. Also if you want to learn more about the 80/20 principle & how it can apply to all parts of your life click here.

7 Simple Steps to Start Selling on eBay

7 Simple Steps to Start Selling on eBay

Often people try to pitch get rich quick schemes on eBay. These are rarely ever legitimate. There are several ways to make money on eBay, but unfortunately all of them take at least a bit of time. This isn’t to discourage you from starting a business selling on eBay. I just want to explain the process in 7 basic steps that if followed will have you selling on eBay in no time.

1. Get an account. Seems straightforward but it is the first step to making a living selling on ebay. Go to eBay and start the process, it will take only 5 minutes and you’ll thank yourself later.

2. Sign up with PayPal. Another simple thing that will create a solid basis for making money on eBay and taking payments via a secure & safe middleman.

3. Build up a little star power. When your account is new the best thing you can do for it is to buy some stuff. Yep, I said buy some stuff. This is for two reasons. Firstly buying stuff will give you the experience of how other sellers do business. You can learn from their mistakes & what they excel at. Secondly, if you pay quickly you’ll get sellers eager to leave you good feedback, this positive star power will help you look more reliable to buyers when they start to buy from you.

4. Know your market. Take some time to think about exactly what it is you want to sell on eBay & why. You need to know your market & do some preliminary research into what they want and why they want it. This will pay off as the market your in changes & you stay ahead of the curve because you’ve always had your finger on the buying market’s pulse. It also helps knowing how much items will go for in auction so when you buy the items to resell you don’t pay too much & cut out all your profit margin.

5. Get a system down. Use Auctiva or another selling platform that allows you to create formats and use them over and over. This will help if you sell more than one of the same item over a period of time. The only time you won’t need a system is if each and every item you sell is completely unique. But that rarely happens, so if you have 50 widgets create a form for the first one & then the other 49 will be easy to get up and sold.

6. Be a photographer. Don’t just take random pictures of your items & put them up, one of the biggest factors in the price an item sells for on eBay is the picture. Items with more & better quality pictures always go for more.

7. Title right, check for misspells & pack it right, pack it tight. Make sure your auction looks good before posting it to eBay, no misspells or horrible grammar etc. Then when it does sell be sure to be timely about getting it out the door and to your customer. My motto is when it comes to packing items you sell is pack  it right & pack it tight. Use lots of bubble wrap, or whatever you need to ensure the packages safe journey to its new owner.

If you have more power seller tips that I left out having to do with selling on eBay please leave them in a comment! Happy selling!

Amazing Deals in Jewelry:

Wholesale Great Deals:

Another great post was a list of the Hot Selling Items On eBay for 2009! It lists a bunch of things that you can profit from selling and it gives you a good idea where the eBay marketplace will be heading in 2010. Gotta keep current with the trends, people! If you didn’t know it yet, this article also lets you know that sometimes, using tracking software is worth its weight in gold.

As for a few of my personal favorites, one of these is on whether or not you can really Make A Living On eBay: something most people consider a pipe dream. In truth, Making A Living On eBay as I’ve proven through my own life, is a REAL possibility. Especially if you know how to optimize your selling on eBay and how to beat the competition.

People are always making claims to riches through Selling Ebooks On eBay. Unfortunately though, this is not usually the case. Ebooks were big business years ago and were selling like hotcakes on eBay; until The Man cracked down on all the fraud that was running rampant. Unfortunately, The Man also cracked down on the legit ebook sellers on eBay. In my post, I explained the best ways to sell ebooks if you must, and gave some cautionary tales as well.

Lastly, it’s all about niche business, even on eBay. Making money on eBay is not a walk in the park, but if you choose a niche, it gets far easier… You can corner your market faster and see a larger profit margin by selling unusual, unique or just plain strange things on eBay. In my post about niching down I explain how to build a Business On Ebay out of even the smaller niche markets.

So that is the roundup of my top favorites for 2009. I love to hear feedback, comments and critiques from you readers out there. Especially if you are into power selling on eBay like me! Let me know your thoughts, your successes and your eBay stories.

One more favorite for the road: if you’re new to eBay power selling and you want to help automate the process check out 5 Killer Auction Tools And Software For eBay. You can run these on a PC and if you’re an Apple person we have a post for 5 more Auction Tools For Macs just for you!

Selling on eBay Tips | Start Making Money NOW!

Selling on eBay Tips | Start Making Money NOW!

It seems like it is tough times to sell on ebay, the economy all over the world is rocky, eBay competition has skyrocketed… but fortunately for you so has eBay users. Selling on eBay is not just about quantity or getting there first, but its about really using your head and acting like your at a giant garage sale. But online, of course. In an earlier post I talked about money making eBay tips that sellers try to keep secret… one of them was to use currency rates in your favor, that means = buying the items you sell outside of the country your in. Preferably in a country where your dollars, euros, pesos go farther then they do at good ole home…

So firstly, find a niche. This can be customized bicycle handles, shiny keychains with fluffy bunny feets on the end (poor bunnies!) or custom made silver jewelry. Lets go with customized jewelry for now. Here is a real life example (from me) of how I make money on eBay every time by using my own eBay selling tips to my advantage.

  • Go to Zeelver.com and look around… it is amazing, I get lost in all the intricate, beautiful silver jewelry. Its like being at a gypsy flea market online and the prices are unbelievably low! You have to make a minimum order of $100 or $200 USD but that is nothing in comparison to most jewelry wholesalers.
  • Chose wisely, double check some of the things you want to sell before you put them in your cart with what is already on eBay if you want to buy heavy inlaid silver necklaces make sure there is a niche for them on eBay already.
  • Make your choices and buy. This site like other reputable wholesalers based around the artisan niche ships out your items in a timely fashion & when you get the box at home you will be blown away by the quality of this stuff!
  • Retake the best pictures you can of each piece of jewelry (if you were smart you bought between 10-20 of each so you have to only do the work of describing it/photographing it once and then profit 10x) and build a description.
  • Check similar items and decide if you either want to be the highest priced option (premium) or the lowest priced (auction style) listing – I talk about this in length on 7 money making tips for eBay and why its good to never be stuck in the middle price wise.

Ta-da!! That is one way I buy items for around $5 each and resell them for between 3 up to 5x more on a regular basis. See i told you it was easy! Want a more in depth look at my methods and madness behind eBay powerselling? Check out my eBook just chock full of good stuff on eBay powerselling.

Make A Living On eBay

Make A Living On eBay

A lot of people think it seems like a stretch to believe you could actually make a living on eBay. But it’s no joke, I’m living proof. I haven’t had a “real” job for ages and my eBay income has allowed me to pursue other online passions like Tweeterpreneur and Escaping the 9 to 5 (my pet online projects; check them out!). So how does an average person who has a family (or at least goldfish) to feed, make a living on eBay? It’s easier than you think, if you just break down the numbers.

First, sketch out your expenses, like rent, car payment, insurance, monthly food budget, extras and maybe a gym membership. Whether you have 5 or 50 expenses per month, write them down and attach their monetary value next to it. Alright, now how much do you absolutely have to have to cover those expenses every month? $2000, $3000, $5000? It’s all up to you.

Alright. Now for the fun part: what would you like to have as spending/saving/investing or vacation money every month? An extra grand or two? Whatever that number may be, whether only a hundred bucks or three thousand, write it down. Now calculate your total.

Let’s say it’s $3000 a month to pay all your bills and leave you with extra spending money. Break that down over 30 days and you have to earn, in profit, $100 bucks a day. Now, from a work perspective that seems tough. If you are working for someone else making $10 an hour before tax, you’d have to work 10 hours a day EVERY day of the month to make your goal! Now that isn’t living. But from an online income model perspective, that ain’t hard. If you sell a product like Jewelry (I sell jewelry!) and you buy it in bulk from wherever (I’ll TELL you where I get some of mine from, if you sign up for the newsletter) and it’s $10 a piece of jewelry, and you sell it for $15, then you just made 5 bucks in profit. Not enough to buy a latte, huh? But wait: what if you sold 20 in a day?

Aha! All of a sudden, you just made your $100 dollar a day mark! And trust me, it’s not hard to push through 20 units of a product daily, especially if it’s something in demand, like jewelry.

This is honestly how I got started. I was at a cafe one day sketching out how much in profit I would need every day in a month to have enough to live on and some extra. Even a huge number seems doable when you break it down. And when I wrote out what I needed, it became much easier to accomplish. Take note, I too started with $100 dollars a day in profits, but soon outgrew that!

So go grab a pen and paper and write out your expenses, plus a little extra, and then find your daily number. Now minus the stress and headache of working for someone else, and add the amazing freedom of working from home. Tell me that isn’t at least worth trying to make a living on eBay. And if you need a more step by step guide explaining exactly how I did it, check out my eBook & get access to the amazing Rolodex full of priceless eBay selling resources.

Niche eBay Business + Low Start Price = Crazy Profits

Niche eBay Business + Low Start Price = Crazy Profits

eBay is becoming a way kids make money, retired people bring in a paycheck and single moms are able to stay at home with their kids and still make more than they did at their day job. But still many people I meet don’t understand how to make money on eBay. As I explain in my eBook, which you should really check out (shameless plug!) there are two definite ways to make money: either sell a lot of mass produced items or sell a few, unique “niche” items.

But recently, as eBay’s mass-produced & dropshipping markets become over run with eager money seekers the “niche” market is the best place to start selling on eBay, especially if you want to make money fast. It just depends on what type of niche you decide to go into. David Wirtenberg, not yet 30, is an eBay powerseller who has sold over 10 million dollars in a year. He sells wedding bands, engagement rings and other specific, high priced jewelry. Most auctions he starts begin at the .99 cent price, but because of the unique nature of his business model David still makes money… usually more than his competitors who have their items set at “fixed price”.

A famous tattoo artist auctioned of 10 spots to the highest bidders where the winner would get to be tattooed by the legend, each tattoo sold for around $3000… something that would normally cost no more than $500! Talk about niche! Just think about it, if only a few people are selling authentic signed guitars from famous musicians the prices are going to be much higher than if you sold 100 Gibson guitars at set prices. But how to find these unique, niche items? Open your eyes, get creative, go to Pawn Shops & check out craigslist for people who don’t realize what gems they are selling for little money.

Its doable, I’ve made my money selling in a very specific niche for years. But because most people buy into the “dropshipping” myth (that its the only way to make real money) the niche markets stay slim… which is good because that is what makes them so profitable!

**p.s. the picture is of the grilled cheese w/ an “image” of the Virgin Mary on it. It sold for over $28k on eBay years ago!
